TOP TIPS FOR BUILDING POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH RECRUITERS

  • Identify who the key recruiters are for your particular sector / role – using your network to find a personal recommendation is always helpful.
  • Be clear about what you’re looking for when having conversations – recruiters are there to place you in a new role, not provide careers guidance.
  • Remember, if you want the recruiter to introduce you positively to a potential employer, what do you need to present to them in terms of information and personal presentation ?
  • Be assertive in requesting information before attending an interview and make the most of the recruiter’s specialist knowledge and network.
  • Manage the relationship sensibly – don’t expect a recruiter to share your priorities or degree of urgency.  Be professional and proactive.
  • If you see an interesting role advertised with a recruiter you’re already registered with, get in touch.
  • Think about how many recruiters you can realistically build a positive relationship with – somewhere between 3 – 6 great contacts and you’ll be doing well.
